Show/Tell/Share: Hello! Just letting you know all the *AMAZING* photos are now up from our very recent Sydney November event on our new events page. Check them out! It includes individual photos of our *delightful* models. Oooooh, Aaaaah, Fantastic!

Again, my many, many thanks to all involved for making The Social Outfit‘s first event an occasion to remember xo

Models: Oboya, Susan, Hawanatu. Clothes by The Social Studio. Photo by Hayley Hughes.

Models: Madeleine, Holly, Abuzar and Tamika. Clothes by The Social Studio. Photo by Hayley Hughes.

As for me, I can’t believe our showcase was one week ago to the day. I literally haven’t stopped since then, including the last two days down at Wollongong University. With 2-hours of travelling each way, and interesting social media workshops, my brain is feeling both very full and pretty tired! Still, my university work pays the rent, and allows me to keep working hard on developing The Social Outfit: so no complaints here… xo

Tuesday. Earrings from op shop, original Condoman brooch gifted by Viv, Primo Emporio denim vest, Saba cardigan, Anna Bennett dress from op shop, Simon de Winter socks, Fluevog shoes.

Wednesday. Ken Done t-shirt (that pink you see is the kangaroo’s tail!), dress from op shop (adjusted by me), Sportscraft belt, Uniqlo leggings, Fluevog shoes.

Show/Tell/Share: A fun time! A *good* time! A successful evening of hope, and great fashion…

Models (L-R): Oboya, Susan, Hawanatu, Madeleine, Holly, Abuzar and Tamika. Photo by Hayley Hughes. Clothing by The Social Studio.

I’m still in the process of collecting and collating photos from the night. The ‘eventspage is a good place to start, and it also includes the many, many *wonderful* people who helped make our night possible. Thanks and Hooray for you all! xo

Also, for a first *fabulous* look-see of the models and The Social Studio clothes-styling, head over to Fashion Hayley‘s blog here.

Now here’s a few ‘in-process’ photos…

Who knows exactly what I’m saying here, but clearly all the models like what they hear! We did have such a lovely time, and I *super* thank all these young people for graciously offering to give their time to support The Social Outfit.

Practising and preparations at Planet

Earlier in the day, I was binding together out ‘Case for Support’ with a bit of handy sewing…

This is some of the models, Sindy, Kit and myself rehearsing at the Mahjong Room on last Monday night…

And my own outfit for Thursday night. Naturally all The Social Studio… xo

On Friday it was back to the grind with my university work, which continues much of this week too… Phew! Until it quietens down a bit, I’ll try and stay in touch and I *promise* to get all the fashion photos to you as soon as possible! xo

Sneak peek! Just a short post as we count down to our supporter event this Thursday evening. Nervous! Excited!

Here’s a couple of deliberately blurry, but hopefully *fun* in-situ photos from the Monday evening rehearsal night. You can see stylist Sindy from Africa Konnect, just a couple of the *great* young people who will be our models on the night, and some of us from The Social Outfit. It was SO lovely to meet our models, and everyone’s getting excited now…

Also, in the true spirit of *community support*, a SUPER thanks to William from the Mahjong Room for letting us use his restaurant(!) space with short-notice to sort out outfits and practice for our big day.

Please on Thursday night wish us *luck*, and we’ll share with you how it all goes, of course! This night begins our more public journey of showing people what The Social Outfit could be in Sydney, and how we could work with fun, fashion and creativity with our refugee communities.

Photos from the night will be up on the weekend in full. If you want other sneak-peeks, then like our ShowTellShare Facebook page, or check out Twitter with #TSOShow.

And because being busy can often come all at one time, here’s me today as I race off to university for a conference (including me giving a paper on Friday – eeek!). Of course, I’m wearing The Social Studio. I’m totally in the *vibe* now! ;-) xo

Show/Share: When I thought about getting dressed yesterday all I had in my mind was ‘Colourful Sister-Wife’… and this is what happened. I’m not entirely displeased.

Below is my first *go* at a GIF. Mostly it’s about catching what it’s like when the Hawaiian First Officer and I work together. Made more special by yesterday**, with us hanging out down at the harbour and in the Museum of Contemporary Art. This GIF captures me getting told, ‘Stop closing your eyes and looking stoned’… and then me trying to keep my eyes open without looking *INTENSE* …

** Happy Birthday, sweetheart xo xo

Tell: Glasses from op shop, ‘Van Der Glas‘ earrings bought for a The Social Studio fundraiser (TEETH casts! TEETH casts!), Laura Ashley shirt from Canberra op shop, Tatty Devine necklace, vintage necklace gifted by my Mum, vintage handmade skirt from Broadway Betty, retail tights and socks, Fluevog shoes, Linda Jackson bag.

Sydney-town, me and my green eyebrows love what you offer on a beautiful day… xo

Show: Meet Kit; The Social Outfit‘s very own intern! On Thursday I met up with Kit, and we’ve agreed she’s going to help us all out at The Social Outfit for the next little while, as we keep trying to make our dream of Sydney’s very own The Social Studio a reality. Welcome aboard Kit! xo

… Ahem. Is anyone else noticing her Tatty Devine brooch!! ;-)

This past week has been *busy* busy! My head is in a bit of a *constant whirr* as we count down to our event next week. I’m trying to grab minutes where I can, so apologies if my posting is erratic, or if I’m not wholly making sense…

At the same time, we’re getting to keep having fun, and working hard. This is me and my Dad this Thursday night. He was in town, and we were all off to Planet’s own end of year party.

Ross of Planet has *super* kindly offered us to use his space next week for our event and show, and let me tell you, the space is gorgeous! Check out just a small sample of Ross’ great style … *swoon*

We stopped in an alley way for a photo, and you can see the wind was having some fun with my The Social Studio silk skirt. These photos feel a bit metaphorical at the moment: I’m a little bit blustery, but we keep forging ahead. xo xo

Tell: Glasses from op shop, The Social Studio fabric necklace, African necklace gifted to me by Dad, vintage top gifted to me by a woman when I first arrived in Sydney, Saba belt, The Social Studio silk skirt, Sportsgirl tights gifted by my Mum, Fluevog boots, Australiana bag found on eBay.

Show/Share: What’s this? Two people, at night, with *suspicious* bags… It’s almost as if some kind of swap is about to take place…

And it did! Here’s our board member, David Hardie having recently returned from a trip to Melbourne with a bag full of *BEAUTIFUL* new The Social Studio collections, doing the ‘handover’ to me last night. (Board member, Sarah Chisholm is ably standing by to keep an eye on me!) These pieces are for us to showcase at our event next week. I laughed because look how much I’m *gripping* onto the bag… “Let me see the outfits! Let me see what The Social Studio is lending us! How exciting!”

Thanks The Social Studio for believing in The Social Outfit, and what we want to build here in Sydney xo xo

Last night was also The Social Outfit‘s first formal board meeting. Bit by bit we’re progressing our work.

And now on to my outfit. Two interesting things happened yesterday:

1. Approximately one billion people told me at my uni job that the leggings I was wearing were “fantastic”. Seriously, that many people! And of course, these leggings are just another great example of The Social Studio‘s design and fashion work. Love!

2. A colleague also said, “You’re looking more subdued today”. Looks like I may have been hitting the colour palette on *full-blown* for a while, if the addition of some black to the wardrobe makes people think I’m looking plain!

Tell: Earrings from Shag (Melbourne), handmade necklace, possum brooch gifted by my Mum (1980s classic), fake Ken Done kookaburra brooch, pewter koala pin from op shop, Awyon skirt worn as dress from op shop, The Social Studio leggings, Lacoste sample boots.

I had a bit of an Australiana jewellery also thing happening… I’m *loving* my little possum hanging about on my necklace ‘wire’… xo

Show/Share: On Saturday morning I left the house at about 7:45 a.m. and returned at about 12 midnight. Needing a *long-haul* outfit, I went for pattern-clash and relaxed…

During the day, I was part of an Action Learning Set; working with a small group of people trying to get our social projects off the ground and to get them working effectively. It helped having a nice view while working hard…

Tell: Handmade jacket from op shop, handmade necklace (from owl found in Hawaii), Dragstar dress, Caledonia tights, retail socks, Fluevog boots, Jenny Kee bag, Viva La Wombat scarf from op shop.

Show/Share Two: … And then today, we had a Sunday lunch birthday. This outfit literally just made itself as I started mixing blue and orange and white, and then repeating the colours over and over again, and going for my *love* of over-matching.

The Hawaiian First Officer and I aren’t known very well for our outfit matching, and so when the *genius* moment of the HFO’s use of blue, orange and white occurred here too, I was MOST excited. Plus, a Hawaiian shirt, no less! (And you, dear reader, well you know the HFO: not quite so keen on the multiple selfies!)

A *good* weekend. I hope for you too xo

Tell: Ken Done for Canteen scarf from op shop, necklace from op shop, vintage Snoopy brooch from op shop in Canberra, secondhand cardigan from Retospec’d, vintage cardigan clips from op shop, handmade dress from Bankstown op shop, Spin Dance petticoat, retail stockings, Happy Socks, Fluevog sandals, ‘Vintage Penguin’ bag from UK. Earrings from op shop and ‘Diamonds Ain’t a Girl’s Best Friend’ cloud ring from London, UK.

Show/Share: A busy day yesterday: meeting with some of our supporters who are helping to bring together our November showcase event…

And it certainly helps to maintain a positive mood when your first meeting of the day is in Clovelly. Chloe and I met Emma, who has graciously offered to help us with our graphic design work. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with, and then share it with you, of course! Thanks Emma xo

Then next on to our meeting with Sindy Dube (who I’ve before before). Sindy is part of the Africa Konnect group, and has agreed to be our very own stylist for The Social Outfit’s first Sydney runway show. *Woot, woot!* I love this photo Sindy let me take; she was totally rockin’ that horse shirt!

Finally I met with some of my Board members to help me with our finalisation of The Social Outfit ‘Case for Support’ and financial modelling (not that it ever really ends, though… you just keep trying to get clearer with explanation, each time).

So like I said, a busy day, and one filled with equal measure hard work and hope! xo

Tell: Earrings from op shop, handmade necklaces, The Social Studio silk dress, vintage cape from op shop (which I totally need to wear again, because this photo doesn’t do it enough justice… so you can look here), Saba belt, Black Milk leggings, Camper sandals.

Show: Metaphorical Dressing 101: when attending an information night; bring your own paperclips to hold down *good* information…

Tell: Tatty Devine jewellery, handmade jacket from op shop, The Social Studio silk dress, TS14+ slip, Sportscraft belt, retail tights, socks from Barcelona, Fluevog shoes.

Share:  Last night I attended an event called, ‘Social entreprenuers: the face of social change in Australia’ hosted by Swinburne Philanthropy Alumni, with The School for Social Entrepreneurs and Macquarie Group Foundation. It was a perfect opportunity to meet SSE’s new CEO, Celia Hodson and Julian Lee from FoodConnect, and to reconnect with SSE fellow Michael Maxwell.

What did I take away from the night? A meeting soon with Julian, and the insight that we just need to keep plugging away. So with that in mind, I’m off for a busy day of The Social Outfit work (post with today’s outfit to follow later)… xo

Show/Share: According to the official ‘Sydney Weekenders CBD Stare-O-Meter’, today’s outfit rates *very* highly. I’m thinking its because I look a little like your average Sunday Female Drag Queen. That, or according to the *joy* on many 5-year olds faces, a Sunday Clown. Either way, I’m pretty happy. xo

Tell: Beads from op shops, handmade earrings, Uniqlo skivvy, gifted second hand 1980s dress (given by Eliza because she thought it looked like Ken Done), vintage belt from UK, Ken Done handmade skirt, Happy Socks, Trippen shoes from Berlin outlet.

Show/Share: Nothing quite says, ‘I’m ready to learn the technical know-how of the TAFE assessment process’ better than a high-necked, frilly peach *blouse*, I think.

Day Two of TAE: and an exciting Friday ahead … xo

Tell: Necklace from op shop, handmade earrings, ‘Princeton: Exclusively Fashioned in Australia’ blouse from op shop, handmade skirt from op shop, Jonathan Aston stockings, Fluevog shoes.

Show:

Tell: Earrings from Santa Barbara, necklace from op shop, 1980s ‘ARC’ dress gifted to me by Althea, Sportscraft belt, cuff from London, retail stockings, Fluevog shoes.

Share: I find the holding down of two jobs (being, The Social Outfit as a volunteer, and my university work to pay the rent) is mostly OK, until you get those months when both jobs get busy. November is that month for me. So like any *good* strategist, I’m going to put on some ‘armour’ (in my case, this *lovely* 1980s shiny dress), and start working my way through the work bit by bit, by bit…

… For the next two days I’m attending the last module I need to complete my Certificate IV ‘Training & Assessment’ qualification. It means I can become a TAFE qualified assessor, which would be *super* helpful for The Social Outfit (because The Social Studio model is all about TAFE training and qualifications).

So let’s get this month cracking, and let’s get me some TAFE know-how! xo
