I particularly wanted to catch up with Emma-Kate and her *fantastic* fashion social enterprise, WEFTshop:

IMG_1248

As explained on their website, “WEFTshop is a not-for-profit organisation committed to supporting refugee women from Burma living on the border with Thailand by developing their skills as textile artisans. The fabrics they make are the key to our work and to the freedom and financial well-being of many of these women and their families.” It was lovely to see their wares in person, especially the colour-combinations and the talent and skill involved…

IMG_1249

Then on Friday I got to catch up with Kirsten, who is volunteering for The Social Outfit on some work. Kirsten and I used to work together at the School for Social Entrepreneurs, and I’m so *chuffed* to have her helping us out! Volunteers really make all the difference to this start-up work. Thanks KR xo

Sunday: A beautiful autumn day in Sydney…

IMG_3768

To have some fun, and celebrate my birthday…

IMG_3769

Yesterday we spent part of the day checking out some fabulous art at the Art Gallery of NSW. Not surprisingly, I responded *well* to the more colourful works…

IMG_3727

It’s like looking into a mirror…

IMG_3720

These artworks photographed are by Ugo Rondinone.

IMG_3714

Artwork by Sol LeWitt.

And *naturally* I was celebrating the day of my birth by wearing some new, vintage Ken Done. This 1980s shirt had found it’s way to Italy, when I then bought it back recently via eBay to its Sydney home, probably some 10 or 20 years later. I just love it! And, of course, I was also wearing some handmade work from Abuk at The Social Studio.

STS 195-1

Tell: Handmade earrings, Uniqlo skivvy, Ken Done vintage 1980s shirt, brooch gifted, necklace gifted for my birthday, vintage belt from UK, Tatty Devine bracelet, handmade bracelet made by Abuk from The Social Studio, ‘Diamonds Ain’t a Girls Best Friend’ ring from UK, Sportsgirl skirt from op shop, Jonathan Aston stockings, Happy Socks, Fluevog boots, and Tatty Devine balloon leather necklace.

STS 195-2

Artwork by Ugo Rondinone, adjusted here by the *spectacular* Hawaiian First Officer and me.

And then, because I’ve been a little ‘light on’ with outfit posts recently, here’s some from the last few days…

Saturday: An ongoing love with secondhand 1980s Escada…

IMG_3689

Tell: Handmade earrings, Kmart skivvy, vintage Escada shirt, Anthea Crawford skirt from op shop, Jonathan Aston tights, tights underneath from Japan and Fluevog boots.

STS 195-3

Friday:

IMG_3672

Tell: Earrings from op shop, Saba skivvy, Leona Edmiston dress from op shop, Tatty Devine cat bangle as necklace, Estilio belt, Sportsgirl tights as gift, borrowed socks from the HFO, Fluevog shoes, Tatty Devine balloon bag, gifted ‘Frida Kahlo’ bag.

Just me enjoying my mis-matched, but still matching earrings!

Share: Wow… The things I find myself doing in the pursuit of making The Social Outfit happen in Sydney. Take today for example…

In this outfit,

P1040116

At one point, I was standing in an elevator, talking straight to a professional camera-man, pitching The Social Outfit concept in just 45 seconds. Do you know how quick that is?! “Hello, my name is Jackie, and I’d *love* The Social Outfit to happen…” and BAM! 45 seconds is up! Plus, talking to a camera is REALLY hard. And then, a person who works inside the building got in the lift with me too while we were recording live – I don’t think he had any idea why I was standing in a work elevator talking to a camera crew. Heaven knows what the video ended up looking like! One thing I do know: I sure did try my best.

You see, today was my Vodafone Foundation ‘World of Difference’ interview. I’m lucky enough to reach the Top 10 this year, and *FINGERS CROSSED* this time we get it. Honestly, what a ‘world of difference‘ this support would make! A BIG step closer to opening our doors.

Naturally, too, I was wearing The Social Studio for such an important event. And, does my dress look a little familiar perhaps? That’s right, this is the dress Hawanatu showcased in our November 2012 runway show

SocialOutfit09

This gem is made with vintage fabric, and I simply love the design of these The Social Studio dresses: so comfortable, so easy to wear. A worthwhile purchase for me!

STS_183

Tell: Glasses from Japan, handmade earrings and necklace, The Social Studio dress, Fletcher Jones skirt from op shop, retail tights, Happy Socks, vintage 1980-90s Fluevog clog shoes.

And finally, look how we are developing with our The Social Outfit Pilot Project:

TSO_CallOut_Participants

We had so many great people offer to be involved in our workshops, and I’m so pleased that we have on offer a great range of workshops of fashion-related fun. Thanks Nicole, Catharine and Soraya! And soon, we’ll all get to watch the genius-creativity of young people from refugee backgrounds… Exciting!

ShowTellShare One Hundred and Thirty-Nine

Show/Share: On Saturday morning I left the house at about 7:45 a.m. and returned at about 12 midnight. Needing a *long-haul* outfit, I went for pattern-clash and relaxed…

During the day, I was part of an Action Learning Set; working with a small group of people trying to get our social projects off the ground and to get them working effectively. It helped having a nice view while working hard…

Tell: Handmade jacket from op shop, handmade necklace (from owl found in Hawaii), Dragstar dress, Caledonia tights, retail socks, Fluevog boots, Jenny Kee bag, Viva La Wombat scarf from op shop.

Show/Share Two: … And then today, we had a Sunday lunch birthday. This outfit literally just made itself as I started mixing blue and orange and white, and then repeating the colours over and over again, and going for my *love* of over-matching.

The Hawaiian First Officer and I aren’t known very well for our outfit matching, and so when the *genius* moment of the HFO’s use of blue, orange and white occurred here too, I was MOST excited. Plus, a Hawaiian shirt, no less! (And you, dear reader, well you know the HFO: not quite so keen on the multiple selfies!)

A *good* weekend. I hope for you too xo

Tell: Ken Done for Canteen scarf from op shop, necklace from op shop, vintage Snoopy brooch from op shop in Canberra, secondhand cardigan from Retospec’d, vintage cardigan clips from op shop, handmade dress from Bankstown op shop, Spin Dance petticoat, retail stockings, Happy Socks, Fluevog sandals, ‘Vintage Penguin’ bag from UK. Earrings from op shop and ‘Diamonds Ain’t a Girl’s Best Friend’ cloud ring from London, UK.

Show/Share: According to the official ‘Sydney Weekenders CBD Stare-O-Meter’, today’s outfit rates *very* highly. I’m thinking its because I look a little like your average Sunday Female Drag Queen. That, or according to the *joy* on many 5-year olds faces, a Sunday Clown. Either way, I’m pretty happy. xo

Tell: Beads from op shops, handmade earrings, Uniqlo skivvy, gifted second hand 1980s dress (given by Eliza because she thought it looked like Ken Done), vintage belt from UK, Ken Done handmade skirt, Happy Socks, Trippen shoes from Berlin outlet.

ShowTellShare One Hundred and Nineteen

Show: Presenting, my new 1980s high-waisted wool check pants from a Mornington op shop, to celebrate National Op Shop Week:

Op Shops Forever!

Tell: LaFont glasses, earrings from op shop, Tatty Devine necklaces, gifted wrap top, American Apparel leotard, ‘My Fairway Lady’** high-waisted wool pants from Mornington Salvos, Happy Socks, Fluevog shoes.

** I’m pretty sure with that label these are not only golf pants, but golf pants with a bit of humour (i.e. ‘My Fair Lady’ becomes ‘My Fairway Lady’). Love It!

Share: And, today I met with Chloe Wilson, who *excitingly* is going to volunteer with us at The Social Outfit. Chloe comes with a background in business operations, and I can tell she a ‘get things done’ kinda of person. Thanks Chloe, welcome to the team! xo

Share: Today I’m also introducing another important person from The Sydney Outfit.

The Sydney Outfit are the group of people helping me develop our version of The Social Studio model here. You met Antonia a few weeks ago, and here is another member, David Hardie. He’s a *gem* and here’s why:

Over a 30 year career, David has worked in government, nonprofit and philanthropy organisations, most recently at the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation and The Myer Foundation and Sidney Myer Fund. David also has extensive volunteer experience in diverse roles, including telephone counselling, refugee settlement assistance and youth mentoring. From 2008 to 2010 he helped establish and manage a successful education support program for school students from a refugee background. He is also the Founder and Director of the Slingsby Foundation.

Plus, David is a *lovely* bloke I’ve had the benefit (and pleasure) of working with on many projects for about four years now. He’s thoughtful, a straight-talker and very willing to take on a challenge. Perfect!

And just to end today’s post, a close up of my dress label. How I *love* this name. You say it out loud, and it just sounds rad. Kind of makes me want to say ‘A Division of Lady Jackie’ at the end of everything i say! xo

I know this statement is completely obtuse, but I’m hoping to share the odd, and small-ly fun news soon. It’s hilarious! Will keep you posted, I promise. What I can tell you is these two things:

  1. Take your ‘wins’ where you can, and
  2. High-heels and socks – now there’s a gift!
