Share: Last weekend the historic, and locally-famous ‘Marie Louise’ Hair Salon in Enmore was finally open to the public to see inside. I think it was all the *fabulous* pink and purple that subconsciously influenced my colour-combination choice that day…

Aaaaaaaaand, The Social Outfit is back at Fairfield High School, this time also working with parents. Hooray! Meet four of the women Emma and I are working with on our second sewing project:

IMG_2452

These women are already accomplished at machine sewing, and so we’re very excited about what we can produce together over the coming weeks. We had a great first session together on Wednesday: getting to know each other, learning English terms for garment production, and I’m slowly being taught some Arabic phrases. Fun times!

And given we’re so pleased to be back at Fairfield High School, of course I was wearing something from our Colour Chameleon project to celebrate…

Tell: Glasses from op shop, handmade beaded necklaces, Katies shirt from op shop, fluro singlet from op shop, Oroton belt from op shop, TS dress, ‘The Social Outfit loves Nina Maya‘ leggings for Colour Chameleon, retail socks and Fluevog boots.

Then this was me yesterday, when I met up with my Vice-Chair, David Hardie and we continued final preparations for The Social Outfit as this year comes to a close. Things are slowing down after what has been a very *exciting* and busy year; but we’re not quite finished up yet… and here’s hoping there’s still more *good* news to come before the business-end of 2013. xo

Tell: Handmade earrings and necklace, Saba cardigan, vintage dress as top, Dragstar denim skirt, belt borrowed from the Hawaiian First Officer, retail tights, Happy Socks, Fluevog shoes from Sole Devotion. Tatty Devine hand and cockatoo ring.

Show: Have you seen our short film of The Social Outfit‘s recent ‘Colour Chameleon‘ project? As I’ve been saying to people, I’m so pleased it captures the positive spirit and creativity in the room that night. And what a *wonderful* example of people coming together to celebrate the skills and styles of diverse communities here in Sydney …

I also realised I could probably find an image or two that better shows off the *ace* fabric-combination skirt Emma-Kate made for me of all the designer’s work; from top to bottom: Ken Done, Linda Jackson, Dragstar (Celia Morris) and Nina Maya.

And below, also wearing my own Carla Zampatti silk jacket to pay respects to our Guest of Honour at ‘Colour Chameleon’.

From left to right: me, Oboya, Mogahid and Opia. These young people are part of the *amazing* Afro Contemporary Youth Dance group. (I’m also so pleased that we had make-up provided by students at the Australasian College Broadway. So fun!)

Here also, our earlier short-film from our project at Fairfield High School. We start stage-two of this project next week, and will also now work with parents at the school. I’m so pleased too because many of the young people involved in stage one are staying on to gain more sewing skills, and learn more about the Australian fashion industry…

And here is me from Thursday this week. I spent the day out meeting talented people as we continue community-building and refining our work. Essentially this outfit for me was about celebrating my new-vintage 1980s Jimmy Pike ’Desert Designs‘ cropped t-shirt. Another piece added to my *love*-collection of 1980s Australian designers; and I’m particularly pleased about the inclusion of Pike’s fashion to help represent and celebrate the *fantastic* design elements of Aboriginal artwork, as Jimmy Pike was a Walmatjarri artist from Western Australia.

Tell: Handmade earrings and necklace, Tatty Devine necklace, Jimmy Pike ’Desert Designs‘ vintage crop t-shirt, The Social Studio silk dress gifted by Jo, TS dress underneath, vintage belt from the UK, retail tights, Happy Socks, Fluevog sandals.

Show/Share: I had the *absolute pleasure* of being in Melbourne last Friday as a part of The Social Studio‘s ‘Colour Chameleon‘ Project, in Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. The event took place at the cafe social enterprise KereKere in South Melbourne. (As you might recall, The Social Outfit will launch our own part of this project in October.) For me, I always find it SO rewarding and exciting to see the creativity, passion and *joy* on display in The Social Studio‘s fashion. It’s no wonder then that I want to create a version for us in Sydney!

Here’s me and Alek who hosted the event. Can you see we’re wearing the same dress – The Social Studio’s ‘no waste dress‘ – with some different styling?

IMG_1995

Given we were being MC’s I didn’t get to take any photos, but the lovely Anna – the Digital Textile Manager at The Social Studio – said I could post some of her images here for you to see:

Andrea, another *ace* member of The Social Studio team was involved in the styling and make up …

Here’s fashion designer, TSS student and model, Atong wearing Linda Jackon‘s *fabulous* design for ‘Colour Chameleon‘ …

And here’s one of the models in Ken Done‘s *brilliant* contribution. These dresses were produced as one-off pieces for the show, auctioned to support The Social Studio. In Sydney, we’re going to use these prints to then make some limited edition items for you see, hopefully *fall in love with* and purchase yourself …

Some more styling of Ken Done‘s print, and also Melbourne designer, Limedrop

And here is some of The Social Studio‘s own collection as a part of ‘Colour Chameleon‘ …

There will be more fashion photos and videos to see from this wonderful event. (Eryn, from Her Table Top has a great blog post with lots of lovely photos too, for example.) We’ll keep you updated, and I’m so pleased to have been involved. A *congratulations* to all the models, students, community, TSS team and the designers – Linda Jackson, Ken Done, Alpha 60, Bul, Limderop and Obus – for such a great project.

Below is a photo of Emma after the show. She came to support the event with my sister in law, Susan.  Here she is smiling and happily showing off her leggings she purchased. These are designed by Bul in support of the project. (That’s my brother in the background, too!). Thanks Emma xo

Below are some more photos of my own outfit. These are taken in the social enterprise cafe/bar, Shebeen later that day…

And here’s me yesterday, visiting the White Rabbit Gallery in Chippendale. This gallery comprises of a significant private collection of contemporary Chinese artworks; now open to the public, and free. It’s fantastic and worthy of a look-see.

I found this artwork by Xu Zhen particularly tactile and inviting. With over 70kgs of paint in the piece it appeals to my sense of indulgence and overdoing things!

Show/Tell/Share: Hello! Just letting you know all the *AMAZING* photos are now up from our very recent Sydney November event on our new events page. Check them out! It includes individual photos of our *delightful* models. Oooooh, Aaaaah, Fantastic!

Again, my many, many thanks to all involved for making The Social Outfit‘s first event an occasion to remember xo

As for me, I can’t believe our showcase was one week ago to the day. I literally haven’t stopped since then, including the last two days down at Wollongong University. With 2-hours of travelling each way, and interesting social media workshops, my brain is feeling both very full and pretty tired! Still, my university work pays the rent, and allows me to keep working hard on developing The Social Outfit: so no complaints here… xo

Tuesday. Earrings from op shop, original Condoman brooch gifted by Viv, Primo Emporio denim vest, Saba cardigan, Anna Bennett dress from op shop, Simon de Winter socks, Fluevog shoes.

Wednesday. Ken Done t-shirt (that pink you see is the kangaroo’s tail!), dress from op shop (adjusted by me), Sportscraft belt, Uniqlo leggings, Fluevog shoes.

Share: Given we’re off to see the Dame Edna Everage farewell tour tonight, I kinda *had* to make sure I was dressed with a bit of drag-fun-inspiration, yes?! And really, it doesn’t get much better for a Sydney winter than a vintage 1980s Escada puffer-jacket. *Bliss*

Smiles all round, that’s for sure! xo

Show & Share: Introducing the delightful Antonia, one of *smart and sassy brain people* helping me work on bringing The Social Studio model to Sydney. Yesterday she visited The Social Studio in Melbourne – and she had a great time meeting with Grace and experiencing all that The Social Studio has to offer. Check out all those amazing clothes! (Antonia got herself a scarf, but I have eyes for that tartan…)

So who is Antonia Ruffell? She’s a philanthropy adviser for a private wealth company here in Sydney. Antonia is a *whiz* with all things fundraising and grant-making, and she’s worked with some leading charities in both the UK and here in Oz. Plus, she’s almost-always got a glint in her eye, a great British accent, and I’m really excited to have someone feisty like her on board! Over the next little while, I’m hoping to introduce you to all of the people working with me on this project.

But in the meantime, it’s Saturday night, so I’m off to catch up with some friends…

Tell: Morgan & Taylor hat reworked by me with lip buttons, Uniqlo skivvy, wool skirt as dress from op shop, The Social Studio felt jacket, owl brooch from YoungBloods markets, Juicy Couture patent leather boots.

Plus, you can only just see it peeking through, but I’m sporting pink eyebrows tonight…

And finally my Tatty Devine perspex crystal rings, en masse, plus others. Just love my knuckle dusters…
