Sunday: A beautiful autumn day in Sydney…

IMG_3768

To have some fun, and celebrate my birthday…

IMG_3769

Yesterday we spent part of the day checking out some fabulous art at the Art Gallery of NSW. Not surprisingly, I responded *well* to the more colourful works…

IMG_3727

It’s like looking into a mirror…

IMG_3720

These artworks photographed are by Ugo Rondinone.

Artwork by Sol LeWitt.

And *naturally* I was celebrating the day of my birth by wearing some new, vintage Ken Done. This 1980s shirt had found it’s way to Italy, when I then bought it back recently via eBay to its Sydney home, probably some 10 or 20 years later. I just love it! And, of course, I was also wearing some handmade work from Abuk at The Social Studio.

STS 195-1

Tell: Handmade earrings, Uniqlo skivvy, Ken Done vintage 1980s shirt, brooch gifted, necklace gifted for my birthday, vintage belt from UK, Tatty Devine bracelet, handmade bracelet made by Abuk from The Social Studio, ‘Diamonds Ain’t a Girls Best Friend’ ring from UK, Sportsgirl skirt from op shop, Jonathan Aston stockings, Happy Socks, Fluevog boots, and Tatty Devine balloon leather necklace.

STS 195-2

Artwork by Ugo Rondinone, adjusted here by the *spectacular* Hawaiian First Officer and me.

And then, because I’ve been a little ‘light on’ with outfit posts recently, here’s some from the last few days…

Saturday: An ongoing love with secondhand 1980s Escada…

IMG_3689

Tell: Handmade earrings, Kmart skivvy, vintage Escada shirt, Anthea Crawford skirt from op shop, Jonathan Aston tights, tights underneath from Japan and Fluevog boots.

Share/Tell/Share: On Saturday I got to spend some time with Ajak and his family, including his lovely daughter, Angwai:

P1040004

As you know, Ajak is the Chair of The Social Outfit, and this weekend I asked him to help me with making a film for the Vodafone Foundation ‘World of Difference’ grant. This grant is specifically to pay the salary of a person for a whole year to follow their dream… so that would be *me* and it would be for *The Social Outfit*. Funding like this would be *great* support for our development…

Here’s what Ajak and I made together:

Ajak jumped in and took part with his usual humour and persistence. I have some other footage I’m going to put up soon of him talking about what being involved in The Social Outfit means to him. Thanks Ajak! xo

I love teaching myself to make these films. They’re hard work – I spent the whole weekend pulling it together – but anything that encourages creativity and helps me, and us, to explain what we’re trying to achieve is good learning. A big thanks too, to David Hardie and Meredith Turnbull for helping out specifically with the other grant deadlines too this week. A real team effort!

Oh, and please don’t forget, our eBay Ken Done Plus More auctions are all at go! xo

63 copy

Last, but never least, our ongoing thanks to Grace and the team at The Social Studio. Without your support, we just wouldn’t be here! And good luck for all your Melbourne Fashion Week preparations underway! xo

… BirdMonkey, I partially blame you for yesterday’s outfit, re-inspired as I was after seeing those early 1980s pictures of Nicole K. and her mates in jumpsuits! (See comments here.) Love! xo

Show/Tell/Share: As I watch more and more of Parks and Recreation I become increasingly convinced that there’s some *gold* lessons to learn from Leslie Knope’s approach to work and making a difference in her community …

So when she had something to say about rings, I stood up and took notice. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a lover, not a fighter – I’d never actually plan on “tearing” anyone up with my jewellery (and, of course, Leslie is deliberately being humorous too: she’s a peace-maker at heart). The thing is, people often comment to me about my big-ring-love, and how ‘useful’ they’d be in a fight, so I couldn’t resist the chance to put me and Knope side-by-side on this one …

My Love Knuckles… so you can see the rings better! …

Tell: Tatty Devine earrings and cockatoo ring, vintage 1980s Diane Freis silk top, black and white necklace from op shop, beaded necklace handmade, Easton Pearson silk dress from op shop, Kmart leggings, Fluevog shoes.

Show/Share: Last night we returned to Sydney, and it proved a *spectacular* way to finish up 2012, and herald in 2013… Because we came home to see that the ATO has granted The Social Outfit ‘Deductible Gift Recipient’ status and the ‘Charity Tax Concessions’. Yep, we’re now a bona fide Public Benevolent Institution! *Great news* that is another super important step on our way to securing our future in Sydney. It made the fireworks last night feel a little extra special…

… And I couldn’t have done all the ATO paperwork and procedure without the help of The Social Studio’s Grace McQuilten. She’s supported me every step of the way, and her advice and counsel is *priceless*. A huge and heartfelt thanks to her xo xo

In other fashion-related news, can you believe I found this custom, hand-made dress in an op shop in Perth? $24.99 and my size, it’s like it was made for me! Once I spotted it I just kept clawing at it, praying it would fit. Hooray, it does! Ruffles! *You Rock* Perth op-shops; so much second-hand gold to be found…

Another highlight from Perth was going on an evening boat cruise on the Mandurah Canals to look at people’s Christmas lights. It *so* appealed to my love of kitsch, glitter and frou-frou!

Yet another super-fantastic photo by the Hawaiian First Officer, who really is the BEST live-in-photographer ever! <3 …Thanks for all your support and expertise in 2012 … <3

The Hawaiian First Officer and I also spent New Year’s Eve with friends; including dearest Bec who is sporting my Ken Done shirt she bought in the auctions when supporting What Ken Be Done. Love!

So here’s to a hopeful and fulfilling 2013 for us all! xo

Tell: Hat from ‘Cat Protection Society’ op shop in Enmore, Wa-Nyika earrings, Tatty Devine necklace, handmade dress from Perth op shop, vintage belt from London, Uniqlo leggings, Camper sandals.

Share: One *good* thing about sitting in a holding pattern on our flight from Sydney to Melbourne for over an hour on Friday night was that I got to watch more and more of Mike Nichols’ 1988 US classic, Working Girl

And, as you can see, it was from the 1980s eyeshadow that I took *most* inspiration for my Saturday’s outfit!

Show:

Tell: Earrings from Japan, Dragstar dress, Oroton belt from op shop, handmade silver necklace gifted by Iain, robot necklace from Young Bloods Markets, Black Milk leggings, Birkenstock sandals.

Show/Share: Today, I briefly found myself in this *great place* on the eve of an important Australian speech, twenty years ago now…

And then we headed out to my university end of year celebration.

A lovely afternoon with colleagues and friends, and what I called the *wolf-dog*. She’s huge, but camera-shy, so the day involved me chasing her around to try and catch the evidence of her MASSIVE ears and head…

Good times.

And just a *touch* of some orange lipstick on the eyebrows, because, you know… xo

Tell: Handmade necklace, Retrospec’d dress, vintage leather belt from secondhand store, Spin Dance petticoat, retail stockings and socks, Fluevog sandals, vintage knitting bag from op shop.

Show/Share: My reaction to urban surrounds as summer breaks in Sydney…

Feeling the need for a breeze and some greenery….

Now that’s better!

Tell: Tatty Devine necklace, Hilo Hattie Hawaiian shirt borrowed from the Hawaiian First Officer, “Jaxon Dee’ vintage cotton dress from Prahran, Spin Dance petticoat, Happy Socks, Fluevog shoes, Honolulu Academy of Arts bag. Fan from Barcelona.

And here I am from Thursday last week. Wearing The Social Studio and pink eyebrows as I head off to a meeting about The Social Outfit

Tell: Handmade earrings, Tatty Devine necklace, The Social Studio dress gifted by Jo, TS14 dress underneath, Tatty Devine belt, ‘Beechers Brook’ pants from op shop, Camper sandals.

Loving my pants – found years ago in an op shop – that look mostly black, until you see the electric blue satin *shining* from underneath. Classy! xo

Show/Tell/Share: A fun time! A *good* time! A successful evening of hope, and great fashion…

Models (L-R): Oboya, Susan, Hawanatu, Madeleine, Holly, Abuzar and Tamika. Photo by Hayley Hughes. Clothing by The Social Studio.

I’m still in the process of collecting and collating photos from the night. The ‘eventspage is a good place to start, and it also includes the many, many *wonderful* people who helped make our night possible. Thanks and Hooray for you all! xo

Also, for a first *fabulous* look-see of the models and The Social Studio clothes-styling, head over to Fashion Hayley‘s blog here.

Now here’s a few ‘in-process’ photos…

Who knows exactly what I’m saying here, but clearly all the models like what they hear! We did have such a lovely time, and I *super* thank all these young people for graciously offering to give their time to support The Social Outfit.

Practising and preparations at Planet

Earlier in the day, I was binding together out ‘Case for Support’ with a bit of handy sewing…

This is some of the models, Sindy, Kit and myself rehearsing at the Mahjong Room on last Monday night…

And my own outfit for Thursday night. Naturally all The Social Studio… xo

On Friday it was back to the grind with my university work, which continues much of this week too… Phew! Until it quietens down a bit, I’ll try and stay in touch and I *promise* to get all the fashion photos to you as soon as possible! xo

Show/Share: When I thought about getting dressed yesterday all I had in my mind was ‘Colourful Sister-Wife’… and this is what happened. I’m not entirely displeased.

Below is my first *go* at a GIF. Mostly it’s about catching what it’s like when the Hawaiian First Officer and I work together. Made more special by yesterday**, with us hanging out down at the harbour and in the Museum of Contemporary Art. This GIF captures me getting told, ‘Stop closing your eyes and looking stoned’… and then me trying to keep my eyes open without looking *INTENSE* …

** Happy Birthday, sweetheart xo xo
