Obviously, because I love working at The Social Outfit, much of the clothing I wear and show here are exclusive pieces from our creative and ethical social enterprise. But that is only part of what I wear. So this post is an opportunity to share some other gear I’ve been wearing lately…

Earlier this year I went back to South Africa with some of my family, for a holiday. It was a lovely opportunity to see what locally-made, and African-continent fashion was available. When I saw this two-piece Kisua outfit, I was happy! Here I am wearing it in May…

STS 254 1

Some stuff I’m wearing: Glasses from Dresden, Claire Pain leopard brooch, handmade beads, Kisua two-piece outfit from South Africa, second-hand Adidas shoes.

STS 254 2

Then this is me this year on my birthday, in May also. It was a delight to see how I could match this locally-made South African peplum top with The Social Outfit‘s own silk wide leg pants…

STS 254 3Some stuff I’m wearing: Glasses from the op shop, Tatty Devine earrings and mirror-parrot necklace, PCF ring-pull bracelet from The Social Outfit, Plus-Fab top from South Africa, The Social Outfit silk wide leg pants and gold fabric belt, Birkenstock sandals, Ken Done bag, Red Parka bag from Tasmania.

STS 254 4

Back at work for a Saturday shift last week; I’m in the comfortable and *fashionable* The Social Outfit duds…

STS 254 5

Some stuff I’m wearing: Glasses from Japan, Haus of Dizzy locally-made earrings, Uniqlo skivvy, The Social Outfit silk shirt dress, The Social Outfit leggings (from Seafolly donated fabric), Nike shoes. Detail: Tatty Devine ‘Tudor House’ earrings and anchor necklace.

STS 254 6

And then for a Sunday catch up with friends – and the suddenly cooler Sydney weather – it was my *perfect* chance to wear this unworn, 1980s Canadian-made Ken Done denim jacket. I found it quite recently on Etsy and it was too good not to add to the collection!

STS 254 7

Some stuff I’m wearing: Glasses from Dresden, skivvy dress from the original Dangerfield store in Melbourne (which I bought when I was about 19 years old), earrings from op shop, Ken Done original denim jacket from Canada (bought from Etsy, manufactured 1980s, unworn), The Social Outfit skirt (from Seafolly fabric), Black Milk leggings.

We’ll call this the Continuing love of Ken Done Art and Fashion Post…

Imagine my reaction in August when the Ken Done Gallery team asked if I’d like to have *Ken Done* art nails done by the amazing ‘I Scream Nails‘ gang…

***YESSSSSSSS PLEASE***!!!

It was my first real day off from The Social Outfit since opening, and it felt like a wonderful reward for all the recent hard work. Not surprisingly, I had a ball!

IMG_4377

I went with the ‘Sydney’ nail choice… It felt right seeing as I have been living in this city now for over 14 years!

KenDoneNailArt2

Here’s Zinya who did my nails… And is that a two-piece vintage Ken Done track suit? Why, yes, yes it is! So ace!

I’m wearing a 1980s cotton Ken Done shirt, a new Ken Done sweater from their recent collection, and vintage Ken Done socks…

IMG_4370

And I am completely in love with my ‘Sydney’ necklace by local artist and fashionista, Frida Las Vegas. Plus, yellow Fluevogs!

STS_243_2

Here’s me and the ‘I Scream Nails‘ team, who were up in Sydney for the day, based out of the Ken Done Gallery. Thank you to them, and Camilla, and everyone at the Gallery for always being so welcoming and lovely to me. xo xo

*Good* times!

Show/Tell/Share: This fantastic graffiti artwork by Nico is super close to where we’ll be opening The Social Outfit very soon. It’s lovely to walk past this owl everyday; to admire the colours; and then get stuck into my work of opening our doors to the public in June.

And, here I was thinking things in my life were already very busy with a full site fit-out, hiring staff, and kitting-out a retail shop …

IMG_3652

When this happened:

photo

That’s right, the Hawaiian First Officer successfully broke a foot bone in brilliant style, which means about 6 weeks of crutches… and did I mention we have *lots* of stairs around where we live?!! This experience is clearly going to be an unintended *gift* to teach us about being patient, and taking things one step at a time!

Now, outfit photos…

This was a few weeks ago when I attended Oxfam/3things ‘Cheap & Dirty’ breakfast where people were discussing ethical fashion in Australia. Naturally, I represented us wearing ‘The Social Outfit loves Nina Maya‘ scarf and leggings…

IMG_3572

Tell: Glasses from Japan, Tatty Devine earrings, ‘The Social Outfit loves Nina Maya’ scarf and leggings from Colour Chameleon, vintage handmade dress from op shop, Fluevog boots, Unit Portables bag from Japan.

STS 240_5

Then here’s me at a weekend, about to catch up with friends… (wearing an-almost graffiti hat or is that a bowl on my head…)

IMG_3598

Tell: Glasses from Japan, Tatty Devine earrings, Esprit skivvy from op shop, Esprit 1980s shirt from secondhand store in Newtown, skirt from op shop, Black Milk leggings, Fluevog boots, Unit Portables bag from Japan.

And because we’re really in the building stage of The Social Outfit‘s Newtown space, I like to wear jewellery that metaphorically represents where we’re at… (And Tatty Devine, of course!) …

IMG_3602

The School for Social Entrepreneurs asked if I’d come and talk to current students about trying to set up a social enterprise in Sydney; especially sharing candidly how I think about ‘leading’ this work personally. I decided for the talk to break out a sample we’d been playing with at the store: a pink fluffy draped jacket. Fluro+Pink+FluffyFabric+Love = Leadership! It was great speaking to the group, and my main message was how grateful I have been to partner with, and collaborate with so many *talented* people to get us to this stage.

I can’t wait to show you just what we’ve been making behind our closed doors in terms of clothes. And it will happen relatively soon: Promise! (This jacket won’t make it into production we don’t think… but that’s just because we got even better, and *funner* pieces to make!)

IMG_3612

Tell: Glasses from Japan, handmade earrings gifted from Iain, handmade beaded necklaces, Tatty Devine necklace and brooch, The Social Outfit sample pink fluffy jacket, The Social Studio top, The Social Studio silk dress gifted by Jo, Fluevog boots.

STS 240_4

Here’s a few more images of my outfit at the front of Nico‘s Owl Graffiti Spot in Newtown. I found this vintage dress in a Rockdale op shop quite recently. I think it’s so *vintage 1970s pretty*… And my Tatty Devine pegasus necklace is the same as the feathers on the owl… (again matching jewellery to my surrounds…)

STS 240_3

Tell: Glasses from op shop, Tatty Devine necklace, Uniqlo skivvy from Japan, vintage handmade dress from op shop in Rockdale, vintage leather belt from secondhand store, Fluevog boots.

About a week ago I hot-footed it down to Melbourne to say hello to the *fabulous* The Social Studio gang, and to take part in an evaluation project looking into effective interventions with young people, education and training (run by the likes of Dusseldorp Forum, Foundation for Young Australians (FYA), Social Ventures Australia and the University of Melbourne).

My niece grabbed this photo of me wearing my vintage Jenny Kee wool patchwork jacket I found on eBay, and a The Social Studio ‘no waste’ dress… I *heart* this style of dress SO MUCH!

IMG_3674

Tell: Glasses from Japan, earrings gifted op shop, handmade beaded necklaces, Jenny Kee vintage wool jacket, The Social Studio ‘no waste’ dress, Saba sample belt, Black Milk leggings, Fluevog boots.

And for a momentary-fashion-outfit-break, check out just *some* of the wonderful people helping me turn The Social Outfit from ‘idea’ to ‘REALITY’. From the left is volunteer Althea Mackenzie, who’s helping on all things HR, volunteers and operations; then Traci Thomas who is volunteering to source fabric donations and help research aspects of our fashion production work; and then there’s Emma-Kate Wallace, who is in charge of our all manufacturing and retail work (plus she also runs WEFTshop too). These three are ACE x 1 million!

IMG_3588

Look at this delivery from Traci of donated fabric. Thanks so much to Traci and our fabric donation lables! If this fabric wasn’t being used by us, it was about to go into landfill…

IMG_3664

Aaaaaand, back to outfits… Check out this The Social Studio dress in vintage fabric…

IMG_3711

Tell: Glasses from op shop, Uniqlo skivvy, Tatty Devine necklaces, The Social Studio dress from vintage fabric, Spin Dance Australia petticoat, Trippen shoes from Berlin.

STS 240_2

And the last outfit here. Given I’m writing this at night, it seem appropriate to finish with my Tatty Devine moon, as I finish up another day…

ShowTellShare Two Hundred and Thirty-Eight

Well that month between posts here went incredibly quickly! I guess this is what I meant in my new ‘About Me‘ page when I said things might be a bit more sporadic on the blog as I work to set up The Social Outfit full-time in Newtown. Still, as I do love a bit of a dress up and creative-fun, I like to keep sharing outfits, also with a bit of a personal ‘catch up’ on The Social Outfit‘s news too. And, I can assure you, there’s much more information to come on both fronts over the coming months. But, in order to get you up to speed here’s a ‘Show/Tell/Share’ summary…

I’ll start with a recent outfit from this weekend. (Have to say, I’m loving that it’s getting cooler in Sydney. Well, perhaps more accurately, I should just say ‘less humid’.) So back to some layered-pattern and tartan fun:

IMG_3421

Tell: Glasses from Japan, Tatty Devine earrings, necklace and rings (a matching set), ceramic cloud brooches borrowed from the Hawaiian First Officer, The Social Studio shirt, The Social Studio dress underneath, Black Milk leggings, Fluevog boots. Vintage Jenny Kee bag.

STS_238_3

And there’s this outfit below, which I’m really just showing because it includes a recent  vintage find of 1980s Diane Freis, which I found in the Cat Protection op-shop in Enmore. I haven’t had much of a chance for op-shopping of late, so I was *super* pleased when I made a quick visit to the ‘new’ Cat Protection, and got to add some more *ace* ‘DF‘ to my collection (I think I probably own about 7 pieces of her multi-coloured 1980s Hong Kong range now). I’m actually wearing the skirt part of the outfit, just re-purposed as a dress…

P1050034

The outfit also includes The Social Studio digital print silk scarf, Claire Pain zebra brooch, Fluevog boots, and my ‘eye’ earrings from Tokyo…

STS_238_2

Work-wise, The Social Outfit invested recently in our first industrial sewing machine. As this photo below might indicate, I myself have *no* idea how to use it… But I can assure you it’s already fully in swing, and I can’t wait to soon show you some of the fashion being produced on it. We may be in a mostly empty space (our retail store fit out starts very soon), but there’s small – and growing group of us – working hard!

IMG_3326

In our first batch of material donations there was this *ACE* pink fabric… I just had to sit on it, and pose, and imagine all the fashion possibilities! 😉 … (And yes, that would be a Linda Jackson vintage bag, and ‘The Social Outfit loves Linda Jackson’ leggings.)

IMG_3321

Any ideas what we can do with fabulous fabric? So far we’ve had suggested on our Facebook page: a coat like Fran Fine wore in ‘The Nanny‘, a bomber jacket, a winter-style hat, sleeping bags, a vest, and much more! I love the input of people into our fashion process, and we’ll be sure to make something suitably *kitsch* and fun with this material…

IMG_3320

In case you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a peek at our store-front in Newtown. As I said, we look like we’ll be opening our doors publicly in May, so I’d love for you to pop in and say hello (or when you’re next in Sydney). (This recent newsletter from The Social Outfit has more of our news too, including ways to get involved.)

IMG_3286

Then here’s a weekend outfit from this last month…

IMG_3365

With my *deep love* of large rings, I was well-pleased when I found this Musubi ring in Japan at the Mori Art Museum. And here’s the rest of the outfit that day… including some new-vintage 1980s Ken Done

IMG_3343

Tell: Glasses from Japan, handmade earrings and beaded necklace, Tatty Devine necklace, 1980s vintage Ken Done shirt, Estillo belt, Sportsgirl dress from op shop, Black Milk leggings, retail socks, Fluevog sandals, and Yayoi Kusama bag from Japan.

STS_238_1

And finally a work outfit. Also sporting my regular fashion *go-to’s* of The Social Studio dress, Tatty Devine jewellery and Fluevog shoes. Just imagine when I’ll have more of The Social Outfit made fashion pieces to show!

IMG_3381

So thanks for stopping by… and until my next post, xo xo

IMG_6118Share: As per the quote above, I like the idea of fashion representing both “social change” and “social cohesion”; it fits well with what we’re trying to achieve at The Social Outfit this year…

And as for fashion “speaking for us” – if it did speak for me in this outfit – it would be saying, “I love the 1980s and Tokyo-style”… check out my t-shirt from Galaxxxy in Shibuya, Tokyo, and the wonderful peeps modelling on the front. It’s like *ace-ness* personified! In fact, I liked the look so much I copied the eye-makeup! 😉

Share More: These photos are actually from a week ago. The busy-ness has continued, and that included going to Brisbane this week for my Vodafone Foundation ‘World of Difference’ training (NOTE: Tomorrow is the last date to apply for WOD2014, people! So recommended!), and then I came home and got sick momentarily.

But before then, and the week before, I went to the launch of the Social Enterprise Manifesto, hosted by the School for Social Entrepreneurs in Sydney, and launched by SIEEA secretariat and all-round legend, Meredith Turnbull (not that I’m biased at all, right?!!). As part of the invitation we were asked to wear ‘social enterprise’ clothing, and my friends and old colleagues, Kirsten (left) and Sally (right) came wearing The Social Outfit. How lovely of them! Don’t they look *smashing*? xo

STS 236-3

The quote that this post starts with is actually from an exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum that we went and saw recently. The words are on a poster next to this *subtle* costume piece by Ron Muncaster for his late partner, Jacques Straetmans. Given that this weekend is Mardi Gras in Sydney, again I like the idea of fashion as “social change” and “social cohesion”. And I tell you what: if I was offered to wear this piece, you’d have me in it within a nanosecond!! xo xoIMG_3236

ShowTellShare Two Hundred and Thirty-Five

Show: Work at The Social Outfit is happily keeping me *very* busy, and I’m hoping to share some public-news on that front soon… until then, this weekend felt a bit like a celebration of women I think are *fabulous* on the internet, and beyond in their ‘in real life’.

On Friday evening we went to see ‘Lady Sings it Better‘ in the Inner West; they are a cabaret group, including Maeve, who are *hilarious* and so, so talented! I laughed for the whole show, which makes for an ace Friday night in my world! We also went with Kim from News with Nipples, whose writing and ideas I *adore*, and caught up at the gig with the *lovely* Frances from Corpulent. Plus, there was also like a *rad collection* of women from the internet – like Brocklesnitch, Treemie and more – who I was a bit too shy to say hello to properly… yet… but whose online personalities appeal to me in many ways. Good times.

Friday night I wore some new The Social Studio for my party mood…

And then on Sunday we saw dear friend, and *always inspiration*, author Courtney Collins (whose name you have to say in full EVERY time you say it out loud because it just sounds *right* like that). It was lovely to spend *quality* time together. And fashion-special too, because I was wearing BirdMonkey‘s handmade fabric necklace from my ‘What Ken Be Done‘ days for the catch-up. Artist BirdMonkey (a.k.a Raquel) was one of the first, and *best* women I ever have met online… so hooray for an online world, and meeting lovely creative people all round! xo

As you might imagine we’ve got a lot of planning and preparations underway to start off our full-time school, retail store and community space in Sydney. Exciting! And nerve-wracking! Here’s me on a working day, sporting a new The Social Studio dress – made with vintage fabric – I bought when in Melbourne last week…

P1040955

Tell: Glasses from Japan, Tatty Devine earrings and necklace, vintage necklace and bracelets from op shop, The Social Studio dress, stockings from Japan, Trippen shoes.

… I love these stockings from Japan, with the individual toe sections. I know ‘toe-socks’ are far more common in Australia now, but I haven’t seen the stocking-versions take off quite so much. I can’t believe I haven’t laddered them yet!

ShowTellShare Two Hundred and Thirty-Three

We spent the end of 2013 taking a holiday in Japan. It was *brilliant*!

When I was 19 years old, I lived in Japan for a year and since then I have loved the uniqueness of the country and culture. I especially adore the way so many Japanese people embrace art and creativity into daily life. That includes the fabulous combinations of that which is serene and simple, to that which is *totally kitsch* and over-the-top! This trip we went to some of Japan’s best-known modern art galleries, starting with the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo…

PC180164

The sculpture is Sebastian Masuda’s “Melty-Go-Round” Christmas Tree. This art gallery is on the 53rd floor of the Mori Tower in Roppongi, so it has a *spectacular* view of the metropolis that is Tokyo and beyond.

PC180156

… and, as I’m not always the hugest fan of heights, the glass of champagne, and my newly gifted heart brooch from the Tatty Devine team helped embolden me to take in the 360-degree views from up on high!

IMG_2597

A highlight for me of Japan is its train system. I *love* the bullet trains that whizz up and down the islands, and mean you can visit towns far and wide really easily. Here we are passing the cultural icon that is Mount Fuji on a clear winter day…

IMG_2977

IMG_2976

This trip we visited Naoshima. It’s a small island that was historically a fishing village, and has now re-invented itself as an ‘art island’. Many of the installations here are breath-taking. One of my favourite artists is Yayoi Kusama, and her two pumpkin sculptures welcome the ferries coming to the island…

IMG_2923

IMG_2924

Here’s the Hawaiian First Officer at the castle in Okayama. It’s known as the ‘crow castle’ because of the black detailing, and the day we visited, actual crows were circling and the sky was quite dark and gloomy. It was perfect-creepy!

IMG_2787

These trees are in Kanazawa Gardens, and I fell in love with the ingenuity of the rope supports so that the tree boughs don’t break in winter with all the heavy snows.

IMG_5271

And here is just a little reminder of the sheer size of the population of Japan on what is such a small land mass… this is just one bike lock-up area in a small town.

IMG_5664

Here I am on New Year’s Eve in our hotel room in Shinjuku, Tokyo. I have no idea how we managed it, but we *lucked* a room with this gorgeous *cheesy* pink vintage couch! I celebrated the beginning of 2014 wearing ‘The Social Outfit loves Dragstar‘ dress and leggings from our Colour Chameleon collection. Nothing like heralding in a new year with the *fashion hope* of good things for The Social Outfit in 2014…

What a way to end a year; with the fantastic news that The Social Outfit now has enough funding to open our doors! In 2014 we’ll begin a design school and retail store in Sydney’s Inner West. We’ll be able to have a base from which to grow our creative work with people from new migrant and refugee backgrounds.

We’ve been working hard, and it’s so lovely to celebrate now and thank people for the support so far. For approximately 2 years a diverse group of committed people have been working together to make The Social Outfit start up a reality in Sydney. Over this time we’ve also had financial support from a wide range of philanthropists and foundations who have believed in our dream. Now, thanks to the recent generous funding from the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation and Dusseldorp Skills Forum we have raised enough investment so we can set up ‘shop’ for real.

In 2014 we hope you’ll stay involved, show your ongoing support, and help us build our goals. We’re celebrating now, as well as knowing that our next stage of growth is going be challenging and will require the dedication again of many people. We hope you can be part of this. Showing support at The Social Outfit can look like many things, and we look forward to communicating with you next year as we plan and progress with ways to get involved.

In the meantime, we wanted to share this amazing ‘tipping point’ news, and THANK YOU for your part in The Social Outfit community so far. The Social Outfit exists to celebrate the skills and styles of diverse cultures in Australia. In 2014 we’ll be working hard to enrich the educational and employment opportunities for people from new migrant and refugee backgrounds in Sydney. And we can’t wait to share with you this next phase of our story…

And, more personally, given my story of starting support for The Social Studio in 2010, and it turning into building The Social Outfit since then; the feeling of celebration and *thanks* is very, very high. As I hope you know, I’ve always wanted to do *good in a fashion*: with a love of creativity, art, ethics and collaboration. So naturally I celebrated our funding news with some *Ken Done Love* …
