ShowTellShare One Hundred and Ninety-Two

Show/Tell/Share: Check out Susan last Saturday doing some live window-modelling of The Social Studio clothing. Amongst other things, Susan is an aspiring modern dancer, so she was also showcasing her contemporary dance moves down at our Pop-Up Pilot at The Rocks

This dress was so truly suited to Susan’s own style and personality that she happily bought it in support of The Social Studio and The Social Outfit. A beautiful butterfly-inspired-dress for a talented young woman…

P1040234

Thanks for working with us, Susan! Here is what she wrote about the experience:

My favourite part of The Social Studio fashion is the mixture of different colours that is so contemporary, with a link to cultural inspiration. Working with The Social Outfit means getting along with everyone, and it meant I felt comfortable and confident.

Then on Thursday and Friday last week I had my two-day induction as part of the Vodafone Foundation ‘World of Difference’ paid charity leave. Here’s me and two of my *wonderful* fellow WOD’ers – we’ve just finished telling our story for about the tenth time, and to many of the interested staff at Vodafone Headquarters, including the CEO – so no wonder we’re smiling and looking relieved!

On my left is the *darling* Loren O’Keefe from Missing Persons’ Advocacy Network (Melbourne) and the ‘Dan Come Home’ Campaign. On my right is the *bold and bright* Julliette Wright from Givit (Brisbane). Our fourth buddy, not pictured, is Ian Davis from MND and Me Foundation. Right now Ian is riding the ‘million meters ride’ on a two-person, purpose-built, bike from Brisbane to Sydney. Good luck, Ian! (For more about me and my three fellow participants a good snapshot is here, at Vodafone Foundation ‘World of Difference’.)

Last Friday evening we opened for some late-night shopping and a bit of a community catch up. Here’s just a few fun pics from the night…

*Thanks* for your joy and hope lovelies pictured here, and others!

And given that we will close our pop-up doors this Friday evening, 10 May 2013, we’re going to have a small last *hoorah* for all the support and love Sydney-siders have shown from 5.30pm. Follow our The Social Outfit Facebook page for updates…

Share: This is what I wore yesterday. Comfy, with my own touch of *fun*…

What proved most interesting about my day although was that I received two emails from a friend and colleague with possible contacts for The Social Outfit. That is, people I know offering to help me move forward with potential leads, in an effort to raise the money we need to start. I can’t begin to tell you how much this raises my spirits when it happens. Sometimes, when this venture isn’t guaranteed, or all sorted in every practical sense (although we are totally getting there!), I feel quite vulnerable sharing my day-to-day life and hopes. The negative part of my brain says, ‘Who would be interested at all? Just stop trying. This is taking too long…’ Then someone in our growing community makes contact  to say ‘hello’, offer an insight, or share an idea. It makes all the difference.

Which is all to say, it’s *lovely* having YOU as a part of this work, in whatever way you’re involved. Thanks for helping to keep me to my purpose, and to keep me learning and curious. Whatever happens, this experience is real. And if I can ever return the favour, just let me know… xo

Show/Share: Last night we returned to Sydney, and it proved a *spectacular* way to finish up 2012, and herald in 2013… Because we came home to see that the ATO has granted The Social Outfit ‘Deductible Gift Recipient’ status and the ‘Charity Tax Concessions’. Yep, we’re now a bona fide Public Benevolent Institution! *Great news* that is another super important step on our way to securing our future in Sydney. It made the fireworks last night feel a little extra special…

… And I couldn’t have done all the ATO paperwork and procedure without the help of The Social Studio’s Grace McQuilten. She’s supported me every step of the way, and her advice and counsel is *priceless*. A huge and heartfelt thanks to her xo xo

In other fashion-related news, can you believe I found this custom, hand-made dress in an op shop in Perth? $24.99 and my size, it’s like it was made for me! Once I spotted it I just kept clawing at it, praying it would fit. Hooray, it does! Ruffles! *You Rock* Perth op-shops; so much second-hand gold to be found…

Another highlight from Perth was going on an evening boat cruise on the Mandurah Canals to look at people’s Christmas lights. It *so* appealed to my love of kitsch, glitter and frou-frou!

Yet another super-fantastic photo by the Hawaiian First Officer, who really is the BEST live-in-photographer ever! <3 …Thanks for all your support and expertise in 2012 … <3

The Hawaiian First Officer and I also spent New Year’s Eve with friends; including dearest Bec who is sporting my Ken Done shirt she bought in the auctions when supporting What Ken Be Done. Love!

So here’s to a hopeful and fulfilling 2013 for us all! xo

Tell: Hat from ‘Cat Protection Society’ op shop in Enmore, Wa-Nyika earrings, Tatty Devine necklace, handmade dress from Perth op shop, vintage belt from London, Uniqlo leggings, Camper sandals.

Show:

Tell: Tatty Devine jewellery, Miss Shop dress from op shop, American Apparel leotard, skirt from Kmart, retail stockings, Fluevog boots.

Share: This week ahead is set to be a busy one; let alone the many ‘to-do’s’ planned for the whole month of November. So I took the chance this weekend to keep fairly quiet. However, when catching up with a dear friend today, I couldn’t resist putting on some new big rings (bought on sale) for the outing. Nothing like plastic jewellery and over-matching to recharge the battery!! xo

ShowTellShare One Hundred and Thirty

Show:

Tell: Glasses from Japan, robot necklace from Young Blood Designers Markets, 1980s Diane Freis silk shirt, Saba belt, Katies skirt from op shop, Caledonia stockings, Fluevog boots.

Share: I hope you know by now that I like to keep you updated with *tidbits* and stories about what keeps me busy each day; especially in relation to The Social Outfit. But on some days, and in some weeks, it feels like all I have to say is, “Head down, doing paperwork. Head down, doing planning.” This week feels a bit like that. And that sounds a bit boring to share, really… But, like a teacher who once trained me said, ‘You can’t take young people to Disneyland every day, Jackie, otherwise it holds no meaning’…

… So instead of dwelling on that too long, let’s take a quick close up look at this 1980s silk *gem* by Diane Freis. Chris – a regular ShowTellShare follower, and family friend – introduced me to Diane Freis when she found me a two-piece-1980s-divine-outfit in an op shop in Manly years ago (worn here and here). I’ve never looked back, and I now LOVE Diane and her crazy-colour-designs. So thanks, Chris! xo

Show/Tell/Share: Did someone say 1980s cocktail party for charity?! …

Last night was the 30th birthday of Twenty10. I worked there in the early 2000s, and so it was lovely for my friends and I to get a little bit *dolled up* and celebrate all of Twenty10′s good work.

Twenty10′s tagline is: “A Place to be You,” and as you can see, I took that as an invitation to be the *me* of BIG hair, BIG shoes and a 1980s LOUD outfit! I’ve had this Parisian number in the wardrobe for years (found in an op shop, of course) and decided last night was just the right time to get it out and style it up…

It’s so funny because this 2-piece suit is all plain “Business at the Back”, and then “Party at the Front”…

Tell: Earrings from UK, Tatty Devine necklace, ‘Romeo Pour Juliette’ Paris made 2-piece suit from op shop, Saba belt, fingerless leather gloves from Florence, Demonia boots,

Iain and David looking fancy…

Here’s Bec rockin’ the pinks and gold…

(I gifted Bec this op-shop-found vintage dress a while back, and *love* that it’s gone to a welcoming home).

I also love that my friend and hairdresser David at Bedrock took my request for big 1980s hair seriously yesterday. Thanks to crimping, teasing and a whole-lot-of-hairspray, I think he achieved some expert frizz action!

Good times xo

Show / Share: Because *a picture is worth a thousand words*; I’ve made one into a necklace…

We were entertaining dear guests and friends last night. Good times xo

Tell: Glasses from op shop, handmade necklace from a ‘Made in Italy’ silk picture found in an op shop, Photios Bros. beaded necklaces, vintage handmade dress from op shop, skivvy from op shop, Saba belt on sale, Japonica Barclay shoes on sale.

Show:

Tell: Emu Australia Design 1980s drop-waist dress from op shop, necklace gifted by Bec, Penguin Classics vinyl tote from UK, Fluevogs.

Share: The flash on the camera is playing up, so I have a bit of that ‘vaseline lense’ going on in these pictures. Although, potentially, this may actually also help soothe the eyes when looking at me wearing an *orange* *drop-waist* *1980s* dress! What can I say: I love this dress, even if I may be the only one! xo

ShowTellShare Thirty-One

Show:

Tell: Tatty Devine earring, Diane Freis top from Manly op shop (see how it’s the ‘matching’ top of the skirt I made into a dress here in STS16), Levis organic cotton jeans (I gave them the cuffs, I can barely handle jeans), Camper boots.

Share: Just a quick post, as I’m working at my university job today, and need to get cracking. I did want to take a moment however to *THANK YOU* so much for all the lovely comments about my newsletter update. I’m so glad you liked it and you got that it is about me being creative and giving information in a different, fun way. As you know, I really want to see The Social Studio set up in Sydney – and this was my own small way of sharing that hope. So ‘woot, woot!’ for you! And, because the age of commenting can now be across a multitude of social platforms, I just wanted to share with you a couple more encouraging comments from supporters:

“It is a great newsletter. I can’t remember the last time I read a newsletter from top to bottom!”

“Love the newsletter you sent through, very quirky.”

“BEST. NEWSLETTER. EVER. !!!”

There were plenty of wonderful words, and I thank you each and every one. You see, you guys are like my new Tatty Devine earring from eBay; it’s based on a street sign from Japan (we got a photo when we were there last time, see below). By holding my hand, and being a support, you help me do better! OK sure, maybe a bit sappy, but I don’t care!! xo

Show:

Although it looks like I’m trying to pour tea on my dress, what in fact I’m attempting to show you my new Spin Dance petticoat! But alas, I was running late last night, so I’m afraid this is the best shot of my lovely teal petticoat I have for now. Hardly anything! Oh well, I’ll just have to wear it again soon…

Tell: Jean Lafont glasses, Photios brothers necklace with Tatty Devine brooch, Retrospec’d dress, Spin Dance petticoat, stocking from Japan, Fluevogs and my Amilya silver leather tea pot handbag from Himeji, Japan.

Share: We were off to a friend and his partner’s dinner party last night. As the boys were hosting us so graciously, I borrowed The Hawaiian First Officer’s Tatty Devine ‘Gilbert & George’ brooch to mark the occasion. As it turns out, one of our hosts had heard them recently in Melbourne when they were touring. And we had such a lovely evening with delightful company. Good times!

Show:

Tell: Glasses from op-shop, earrings from Japan, Tatty Devine necklace, vintage Studibaker Hawk dress, Trippen shoes from Rome, and Ken Done bag from Enmore op shop.

Share: We were off to Tilly’s Naming Day today. And, as the First Hawaiian Officer says that Tilly is like a little spirited tiger, I was inspired to wear my Tatty Devine tiger necklace as a tribute to her, and all that she can be in this world… She’s lovely!

Show:

Tell: Jean LaFont glasses, Anna Davern earrings from Brisbane Gallery of Modern Art, Tatty Devine necklace, bodysuit from Berlin, Sportscarft belt, vintage Katies shorts from op-shop, Fluevogs.

Share: Sometimes, when I’m having a crisis of confidence, the best thing for me to do is put on a really big pair of *spectacular* earrings… And, some high-waisted shorts. (Then, go and spend time with my friends and loved ones.)
